Lot Essay

Les sujets de la Flagellation du Christ et du Christ à la Colonne étaient très représentés au XVIIème siècle par les artistes flamands, italiens et allemands. La figure ici présente fut composée d'après le célèbre modèle de l'Ecce Homo réalisé vers 1630 par Georg Petel (1601/2-1634) conservé dans la Cathédrale d'Augsbourg. Ce modèle fut repris et réinterprété par ses contemporains et suiveurs, notamment par David Heschler (1611-1667) dont notre figure en ivoire semble être la plus proche (voir, K. Feuchtmeyer and A. Schadler, Georg Petel 1601/2-1634, Berlin, 1973, figs. 111, 162, 221-2).
