After the picture at Castle Howard, Yorkshire.

10 September 1948
'Left Mundesley for Norwich, travelled via North Walsham and Aylsham to The Maid's Head Inn. Arrived in the afternoon then went to the exhibition at the Castle. A fun show of park portraits. Went to Nightingale's shop to see a picture by Thomas Gainsborough.'

24 September 1953
'Gainsborough's Pig Girl, we have a good copy at Ampthill.'
