A lacquer palanquin
Edo period (19th century)
Decorated in gold hiramaki-e on a roiro and nashiji ground, with the "Three Friends of Winter" motif of pine, bamboo and plum, the ginger-leaf (aoi) crests of the Tokugawa family and repeated scrolling karakusa and paulownia crests, each side with sliding doors fitted with bamboo blinds and upward-opening roof panels, the interior with papered sides decorated in ink, color and gold with landscapes featuring various flowers along with flying birds, all on a gold ground; with matching lacquered carrying pole
