Lot Essay

According to Wang Wenzhi's colophons, in the late 18th century, this painting was in the collection of his two close friends Jiang Cungao (18th century) and Wang Gu (1754-1821), who were both distinguished collectors in Suzhou. Wang Gu's son Wang Chengyi compiled and published Wang Wenzhi's colophons in 1831 and included this painting and Wang's two colophons. In the early 19th century the painting was owned by Hu Xunyu, a scholar, calligrapher and collector in Shanghai. In the 20th century it was part of the Jade Studio collection of Wong Nan-p'ing.
