Lot Essay

In his entry for the pair of vases of this form in the collection of Her Majesty the Queen, Geoffrey de Bellaigue notes that only nine examples of the original design for this vase would appear to be extant, all of the same size, none dated. These are:

The pair in the Royal Collection, paired with what may be a vase 'jardin' as a garniture, all three painted with Turkerie and flowers
The pair at Waddesdon Manor painted with scenes after Nicholas Berchem
The pair in hard paste painted with interior genre scenes in the style of Greuze, documented as from Louis XVI's collection and recently acquired by the chteau de Versailles
The pair painted with military scenes and trophies available on the Paris art market in 1982, current whereabouts unknown
The present single vase
