A SUPERB WHITE JADE ARCHAISTIC VASE AND COVER
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
The compressed baluster body is finely carved in low relief on each main side with a large stylized taotie mask surrounded by interlocking scrolls and on the narrow sides with large stylized cicadas, all below four loop handles suspending loose rings on the waisted neck, those on the main sides surmounted by animal masks, while bird masks surmount those on the narrow sides. The finely polished stone is luminous, and of white color with scattered milky and light russet inclusions well-incorporated into the carving.
