JOHN CAM HOBHOUSE, BARON BROUGHTON (1786-1869)
A Journey through Albania and other provinces of Turkey in Europe and Asia, to Constantinople, during the years 1809 and 1810. London: James Cawthorn, 1813. 4° (266 x 212mm). Frontispiece and one other uncoloured engraved plate, 2 engraved folding maps, 7 hand-coloured aquatint costume plates, 10 further hand-coloured aquatint plates, 7 of these double-page, one engraved facsimile, and two engraved pages of music, with further illustrations in the text. (Closed tear to Map of Albania, very occasional light spotting.) Contemporary calf, covers richly decorated in blind and gilt with Greek key and anthemion borders, spine richly gilt in compartments, two of these lettered in gilt, with red marbled edges (joints split but firm, corners very lightly rubbed). Provenance: Margaret Mercer Elphinstone (signature to upper margin of title-page); her daughter Emily, Marchioness of Lansdowne (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION: BYRON'S FIRST VISIT TO GREECE. A handsome copy in a fine Regency Greek-style binding, with superb hand-coloured aquatint plates. Hobhouse provides a fascinating account of his journey with his friend the poet Lord Byron as they crossed Ottoman lands to Constantinople, and includes a glimpse of the court of Ali Pasha at Yannina.
