Lot Essay

In 1988 Roy Lichtenstein began work on a group of Reflections paintings, in which the central image is partly obscured by reflective streaks, as if behind glass or reflected in a mirror. By the end of 1990, Lichtenstein had completed a large body of work on the theme, often looking for inspiration to other artists' work as well as revisiting past subjects in his own art.

Work began in 1989 at Tyler Graphics on the seven prints of this series, which combine lithography, screenprint, and relief with collage and embossing. These multimedia prints suggest both his glazed paintings and the Mirrors reflections from the 1970's. They also refer back to the artist's Pop and comic images-blondes, lovers in conversation, fighter pilots, Sweat Pea and Wonder Woman-as well as his abstract expressionist paintings, in other words, to the entire gamut of Lichtenstein imagery.
