Lot Essay

These finely drawn and crisply carved chairs relate to examples shown in S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, vol. I, London, 2008, pp. 154, 158 and 181. Fluted or 'cabled' (almost reeded) legs headed by stiff leaves and paterae were heavily favoured by the firm in the 1780s.
