Gareth has helped organise a number of exhibitions of chess sets, including shows at the Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Museum as wellas being Exhibits Co-ordinator of the 1986 World Chess Championship between Karpov and Kasparov held in London. He has written extensively about chess to introduce the game to a young audience and in 2000 published Master Pieces which discusses in detail the most influential chess sets in the history of the game across cultures and continents of what he considers "the greatest game in existence".
