Lot Essay

The present picture would appear to relate to the Portrait of a lady in the collection of the Duke of Westminster, which, along with its pendant, have been traditionally thought to be by Rembrandt. They have been more recently attributed to Carel Fabritius whilst he was active in Rembrandt's workshop, and given a probable date of 1642.
