AN EGYPTIAN LIMESTONE RELIEF
OLD KINGDOM, 5TH DYNASTY, 2465-2323 B.C.
Sculpted in shallow raised relief, preserving a man seated before furnishings, leaning against a bolster, his feet flat on the cushion, his left elbow resting on his bent knees, holding a staff in his left hand, and a bull-tail fly whisk over his right shoulder, three registers of funerary goods before him, including on the top row, four stoppered stone jars, each tapering to a pointed base and cradled on a stand; the middle row from left to right with a leather bag filled with flax for weaving into linen, a round jar, a bundle of papyrus reeds in the form used as by sailors as a life preserver, and a bolster; the bottom row with two baskets; a Nubian boy, possibly a cow-herder, standing to the right, nude but for a rope tied around his waist, his elongated arms exaggerated, holding a flat-bottomed jar in each hand, that to the right with a funnel-top, a cow (only the tail preserved) before him
