COURTING COUPLES AT A TOURNAMENT, full-page miniature from a vernacular adaptation of Ovid's Ars Amatoria, in French and Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM

The verso with a full-page miniature depicting two courting couples at a tourney, all within an architectural border; the recto with 27 lines written in a fine humanistic hand in brown ink, two initials in gold against a red grounds, one against a blue ground (minor loss of pigment to the sky in the miniature, some smudging affecting the initial 'M' opening the text).
The text is a loose adaptation in rimes plates of vv. 171-176 of the first book of Ovid's Ars Amatoria, the Latin text of which is in the left margin. Ovid enjoyed an enormous surge in popularity from the 13th to the 16th centuries in France, and his Ars Amatoria was translated, adapted, reinterpreted and remodelled by a wide variety of French poets and authors: from Jacques d'Amiens at the end of the 13th century to Jean Bouchet in the 16th.
