4° (189 x 138mm). Title within border of typographic ornaments. Anglo-Saxon and other types. Quire Ss in duplicate. (Small light stain in final quire.) 18th-century reversed calf panelled in blind (rebacked, small repair on front cover). Provenance: Francis Blomefield (1705-52), antiquarian, topographical historian and rector of Fersfield, Norfolk (engraved armorial bookplate dated 1736).
FIRST EDITION OF THE GOSPELS IN ANGLO-SAXON, PRINTED IN THE FIRST ANGLO-SAXON TYPES, cut specially for Archbishop Matthew Parker. They had first appeared in Daye's 1567 edition of Aelfric's Sermon on Easter Day, published under Parker's direction, as was the present Gospel edition. The Gospels were translated from the Vulgate, the preface is by John Foxe, the martyrologist, and the work is dedicated to Queen Elizabeth. FROM THE LIBRARY OF FRANCIS BLOMEFIELD, celebrated 18th-century antiquarian and topographical historian of the county of Norfolk. STC 2961; Herbert 131; Darlow & Moule 1602.
