Lot Essay

Melville made several visits to Spain in the early 1890s. The present watercolour dates from a trip with the Welsh artist, Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956) to the northern regions of Spain in 1892. The expedition saw the two artists hire a barge, the Santa Maria, to sail along the Ebro river.
