Robust, and at the same time elegant, either of these pieces would be a wonderful addition to your collection. Marin wasn’t just an artist, he took part in his first bull fight at the age of only sixteen, fighting with many notable toreros. He later came to London to work in an art gallery, which led to his meeting with Henry Moore, who employed him as an assistant. Marin moved to New York, again to work in a gallery, and later starting up his own. He associated with many artists, including Andy Warhol, who also became a personal friend, and it was in this milieu that he was inspired to create his own work. Today his work is displayed in many private collections in America but can also be seen in Europe, most notably at Malaga Airport. We are very pleased to offer a set of four works by Philip Core, the very talented American artist and writer who died tragically of Aids at the age of only thirty eight. Expressive and imbued by the artist’s pleasure in the male form, we see echoes of Francis Bacon’s work in them. Core was recognized a brilliant man and his loss was deeply felt by all who knew him. Although American by birth, after a brilliant career at Harvard and studying in Oxford, Paris and Florence, Core made his home in London. Despite thinking of himself as an artist first, Core was well regarded as a writer and was employed at the inception of The Independent newspaper as one of the writers of obituaries. Much of his work remains in private hands so this is a unique opportunity to purchase the work an artist who died before he could achieve wider recognition.
