Lot Essay

Pu Ru was An Ho's teacher beginning when the two met in 1944 in Nanjing when she was still a teenager. She studied with him for seventeen years and lived with his family for four. With her teacher's encouragement, An Ho read the Chinese classics, as well as learning to paint and do calligraphy in the traditional way by copying the ancient masters. In this way she gained a strong foundation in the Chinese painting tradition.
