Lot Essay

Fang Zhaolin was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu in 1914. She studied under such great masters as Qian Songyan (1898-1985), Chen Jiucun (1898-1975), Zhao Shao'ang (1904-1998), and Zhang Daqian (1899-1983). She studied Chinese literature and philosophy at the University of Hong Kong and at Oxford University. While in London, Fang experimented with oil painting and eventually incorporated Western techniques into her Chinese paintings.
