SCOTT, Walter (1771-1832). Waverley Novels. Edinburgh and London: James Ballantyne, Robert Cadell and others, 1814-28. 77 volumes, 8° (from 170 x 100mm to 185 x 110mm). (A few scattered spots). Uniformly bound in early 20th-century brown morocco by W.H.Smith, gilt armorial crest on front covers within gilt borders, gilt spines and edges. Provenance: 'from the author' (gift inscription probably in secretarial hand to:) -- Richard Heber (1773-1833) -- Augusta, Duchess of Sussex (ownership inscription to vol. III of Waverley) -- William Henry Smith, 3rd Viscount Hambleden (1903-1948; binding and book label) -- Swinton Hall (pencil inscription to The Talisman).

The volumes inscribed by the author, probably in a secretarial hand, comprise the first issue of Waverley; or 'Tis Sixty Years Since (1814); The Antiquary (1816); Rob Roy. Second series (1818) and third series (1819); Ivanhoe (1820); The Monastery (1820); The Abbot (1820); Kenilworth (1821); The Pirate (1822); The Fortunes of Nigel (1822); Peveril of the Peak (1822; inscribed in Jan. 1823); Quentin Durward (1823); St Ronan's Well (1824; inscribed on 31 Dec. 1823); Redgauntlet (1824); Tales of the Crusaders: The Betrothed (1825) and The Talisman (1825); Woodstock (1826); Chronicles of the Canongate (1827) and Anne of Geierstein (1829).
