A DECENT SET INCLUDING FIVE ORIGINAL HARDBACKS. The work of three editors, Sydney Southerton (1934-1935), Wilfrid Brookes (1936-1939), and Haddon Whitaker (1940). In 1934 Neville Cardus called Wisden 'the most English book in existence'. Yet by 1937 only 8000 copies were being printed. A partnership with the publishing firm of J. Whitaker, who had produced their own almanac from 1868, became essential to its survival. Under the Whitaker imprint, it took on an entirely new look in 1938. 'John' was dropped from the title, the contents were rearranged and illustrations interspersed; Eric Ravilious's woodcut made its first appearance. Here 1934 and 1935 retain their original cricket bat bookmarks.
