Lot Essay

Another version of this portrait, in which Filippo di Francesco I (1577-1582) holds a letter in his right hand and appears before a green curtain with only the rabbit by his side, was on loan at the Spanish embassy in Rome (Madrid, Prado, no. 1956; see K. Langedijk, The Portraits of the Medici, Florence, 1983, III, pp. 845-846, no. 4, fig. 41,4, as Alessandro Allori). Here, Filippo appears holding a portrait medal of his father, Francesco I de' Medici (1541-1587), which is dated 1593, possibly the year in which this posthumous portrait was painted.
