A buff sandstone stele of Umamaheshvara
India, Madhya Pradesh or Rajasthan, circa 10th century
Shiva seated in lalitasana on a low cushion with his foot resting on Nandi, holding Parvati with his lower left hand and a trident, lotus and serpent in the others, the face with serene expression, the tresses of hair arranged in a conical jatamukuta, Parvati seated on his knee holding a lotus in her left hand, dressed in a short dhoti and adorned with beaded jewelry, her face tilted toward her husband, her hair arranged in an elaborate bun, the couple flanked by kneeling female attendants, with their sons Skanda and Ganesha above
