Seated on a cushion and backed by a bolster with his right hand in vitarkamudra and his left holding a manuscript, clad in heavy robes, the face with serene expression backed by a nimbus, surrounded by diminutive lamas and a deer, all amidst a verdant and watery landscape

Lot Essay

Jamyang Dewa'i Dorje (1682-1741) was an important Gelug teacher of the 18th century. He was a disciple of the First Jamyang Zhepa, Jamyang Zhepai Dorje, an important scholar based at Labrang Tashikhyil monastery in Amdo. He also received Buddhist instructions from Morchen Kunga Lhundrub (1654-1728), an important Sakya master.
