Lot Essay

Feng Kanghou (1901-1983), also known as Fengqiang, Xing, Zhikang, and Tangzhai, was born in Panyu, Guangdong province. He served as the Secretary General of Whampoa Military Academy, an editor at Zhonghua Publishing Company, and was also a calligrapher and seal carver. A talented artist, he studied painting with Wen Qiqiu (1826-1941) at an early age, and also learned seal carving from Liu Qingsong (1862-1920). Later in life, he worked on painting stage sets for the opera star Mei Lanfang (1894-1961).
