Lot Essay

The contemporary art scene exploded in London in the 1990s where Tillmans, along with his British Contemporaries, the yBas, began to explore, ‘the grittier elements of youth culture’ (A. Allenchey, 'How the Upheaval of the ‘90s revolutionized the Art World', in Artspace, https://www.artspace.com [accessed 28th July]). This is exemplified by Marianne, 1991, which is a portrait that offers an honest and refreshing depictions of an upcoming generation. As Tillmans states, ‘back then, there were almost no pictures available of normal people – how normal people dress and how normal people party…’ (W. Tillmans, quoted in ‘Wolfgang Tillmans’, Interview Magazine, https://www.interviewmagazine.com/art/ wolfgang-tillmans [accessed 24th July 2014]).
