MIKHAIL FEODOROVICH, Tsar of Russia (1613-1645). Gramota [manuscript document] in favour of [Iakov] Men'shoi Afanasi'evich Streshnev for his many services during the Polish/Lithuanian invasions, and for his wisdom during the famine, Moscow, 4 January 7123 [1615].
One page, 2° (420 x 370mm). Historiated initial 'B' in colours and black for the opening phrase 'Bozheiu milostiu' [By grace of God], 25 lines in cursive 'skoropis' with the usual abbreviations, with title on the reverse. (Minor tears with loss and restoration mainly to the folds, discolouration).
RARE GRAMOTA FROM THE REIGN OF THE FIRST ROMANOV TSAR. Iakov Afanasi'evich Streshnev (the younger) was the great uncle of the future wife of Mikhail Feodorovich, Evdokiia Lukianovna Streshneva, whom he married on 8 February 1626. He is recorded in 1611 as town leader of Meshchovsk, voevod of Mosal'sk in 1625-26, and at Kargopol and Turchanova in 1617-28. He was present at the christening of the Tsar's daughter Pelagiia in 1628; later recorded as voevod of Peremysl' from 1634 to 1641. This initial is illustrated in Annals of the Society of Friends of Russian Books, no.4 (Paris, 1938) p.130, then the property of the dealer Ia.A. Zolotnitskii.
