Details
ESENIN, Sergei Aleksandrovich (1895-1925). Pugachov. Moscow: Imazhinisty, 1922.

8° (180 x 132mm). Pagination: 54, [2], [6], [2]. (Occasional soiling or staining in some margins.) Original front cover on strong brown paper printed in black (detached, lacking spine and back cover). Provenance: Sergein Esenin (presentation inscription to:) -- Iuliia Alekseevna Tetrueva (1894-1954).

INSCRIBED BY RUSSIA’S FAVOURITE ‘HOOLIGAN POET’ WITH THE PENULTIMATE STANZA FROM 'MOI PUT’: ‘Nu chto zhe? / Molodost’ proshla! / Pora priniat’sia mne / za delo, / Chtob ozorlivaia dusha / Uzhe po-zrelomu zapela’, signed S. Esenin, and further inscribed ‘Dorogoi Iulii Alekseevne na dobruiu pamiat’. S.E.’ Inscriptions by Esenin, who died at the age of thirty, are very rare: ABPC records only one at auction in the past 35 years, that one with no verse. The Nauka edition of Esenin’s works records this inscription, dating it February 1925, when Esenin met Tetrueva in Tbilisi, where she worked in the editorial office of Zaria Vostoka. Two editions of Pugachov appeared in 1922: one under the imprint of Imazhinisty, the group co-founded by Esenin and Mariengof, and the other under the imprint of Elzevir in St. Petersburg. Sergei Aleksandrovich Esenin. Polnoe sobranie sochinenii. T.7 k. 1. Moscow: Nauka, 1999. Cf. Kilgour 303.
