[MILLOT, Michel and Jean de L’ANGE.] L’Escole des filles ou la philosophie des dames. Fribourg [but Brussels]: Roger Bon Temps [Christiaens] 1668 [c.1875].

Two volumes, octavo (242 x 155 mm). Five engraved plates; EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with a duplicate suite printed in red, and with five original water-colours of the same size mounted on strong paper. (Occasional negligible marginal spotting.) Uncut in contemporary morocco, spine lettered directly and richly gilt in compartments, covers with a gilt triple fillet border and centred with an arabesque, lined with green moiré silk, gilt turn-ins, top edge gilt (light rubbing at the extremities). Provenance: Milton Luros (sold, Parke-Bernet, 27 April 1971, lot 160).

A UNIQUE LARGE-PAPER COPY, FINELY BOUND WITH THE ORIGINAL WATER-COLOURS FOR THE PLATES, these here in two states, one printed in red and the other printed in black. Perhaps the publisher’s own copy of this very handsome edition of the earliest French erotic manual. This large-paper issue is unknown to Dutel, who records only the smaller, duodecimo issue. Dutel A-360; Gay-Lemonnyer II, 62.
