Quarto (285 x 2228 mm). Lithographed calligraphy throughout. Title page with a cipher printed in black at the foot. 15 lithographs on grey-blue paper, illustrations throughout. (Half title stained red by facing endpaper, plates with short tears to edges, one plate yellowed.) Contemporary blue cloth portfolio, each cover with a mounted printed leaf lined with marbled paper, black cloth ties (some ties lacking, spotting on covers).
THE ONLY KNOWN COPY OF THIS VERY RARE CONTEMPORARY PIRACY of the first edition of the first translation into any European language of The Perfumed Garden, the celebrated 15th-century manual of Arab erotology. Regnault’s translation formed the basis of all other early translations including Richard Burton’s English version. All early editions of this text are rare: AE and ABPC record none having sold at auction. Perceau records this piracy, noting that he has never seen a copy, but saw one listed in a Lehec catalogue of 1885. One of only 35 copies printed, this one number 3. cf.
