Lot Essay

Lucien Pissarro moved permanently to England in 1890, and in August 1892 he married Esther in Richmond. They honeymooned in Rouen, and from there they went to Eragny to stay with Camille and Julie, Lucien's parents. It was there, during their stay in 1893, that he painted the present work. Lucien returned to Eragny throughout his life, and it was clearly very important to him - so much so that in 1894 he and Esther founded the Eragny Press, which took its inspiration from William Morris's Kelmscott Press and over 20 years would publish 32 hand-crafted books.
