CIRCA 1750-52, BLUE INTERLACED L MARK ENCLOSING A DOT, WITH A FURTHER DOT MARK ABOVE AND BELOW TO BOTH, INCISED A TO CUP, INCISED M (?) TO SAUCER

Various cups and saucers described as 'Goblets 8 pans' ('eight-lobed cups') appear in the stock list for October 1752. See Svend Eriksen & Geoffrey de Bellaigue, Sèvres Porcelain, Vincennes and Sèvres 1740-1800, London, 1987, p. 222, no. 39, for a cup and saucer of the same form, where the authors suggest that the octagonal shape may be inspired by Chinese porcelain. A second version of the shape, with a different handle is illustrated by Aileen Dawson, French Porcelain, A Catalogue of the British Museum Collection, London, 1994, p. 71, no. 68, together with the design for the cup preserved in the factory archives and bearing the date '19 fevrÿe mil 1753' (fig. 68a). The flower decoration derives from that found on Meissen porcelain of the 1740s. The cup and saucer each appear to have been painted by a different hand and may have been matched at the factory at the time of manufacture, or subsequently.
