Lot Essay

Nicolas-Antoine Lebel was active at Sèvres as a landscape painter between 1804 and 1845. Antoine Achille Poupart, who was an accomplished artist in oils, appears to have specialised in topographical views for Sèvres. His work includes views for the 1827 'Service des Départements'; a plate from this service painted with a view of the Château de Pau (similar to the view on one of the plates in the present lot) and also by Poupart is now in the Musée National du Château de Pau.

Most of these plates bear on the reverse the faint red script mark indicative of Alexandre Brongniart's endorsement.
