Lot Essay

This miniature is based on a photograph by Alexander Bassano (1829-1913) taken in 1882, a version of which was produced by Bassano on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee in 1887 (National Portrait Gallery no. 13844). Three similar examples to the present lot are in the Royal Collection, see V. Remington, Victorian Miniatures in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, London 2010 II, no. 987-989.
