Lot Essay

The original statue is located in the Place des Pyramides, Paris, near where Joan of Arc was wounded during her failed attempt to take Paris. The sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet specifically chose Aimée Girod (1856-1937) as his model for Joan of Arc because she came from same village Domrémy in Lorraine as the French heroine. The statue was the only public commission by the French government between 1870-1914, erected in 1874 following the French defeat in the 1870 Franco-Prussian War. It was classified a historic monument on 31 March 1992.
