signed 'H. Spilman' and further signed and dated 'H Spilman 1771' (on the tower), with number '22' (verso) and with inscription 'De Brandt Van Het Landmagisijn Tot Amsterdam door H Spilman' (on a fragment of paper attached to the old mount)

Provenance
with R.W.P. de Vries, Amsterdam; from whom purchased by I.Q. van Regteren Altena on 23 February 1933 for 7.50 guilders (Inventory book: '1156. t. Spilman brand [...] admiraliteit').
A looser, unsigned preparatory study for the same composition, also executed in watercolour, is in the collection of the Universiteitsbibliotheek Leiden (inv. PK-1969-T-146).
