Lot Essay

For Christiaan Andriessen's illustrated diary, see lot 41.
Saint Martin's day on November 11 (not October 25, the date inscribed on the drawing) is an occasion for big celebrations in Holland. On the evening before children walk in processions carrying lanterns and bonfires are lit. According to Robert Jan te Rijdt, whom we thank for his help in cataloguing this lot, this drawing can probably be dated to 1806.
