Lot Essay

For the artist's illustrated diary, see lot 41.

Another page from the diary, dated 3 March 1808, shows the artist and Friedrich August Hoffman drinking coffee together at Hoffman's house (Stadsarchief, Amsterdam). Hoffman was born in Stuttgart in 1778 and enrolled at the Art Academy in Amsterdam in 1809-10 as one of Jurriaan Andriessen's pupils. Christiaan's diary also records a previous occasion on which they met for coffee, on 30 December 1806.

We thank Robert Jan te Rijdt for his help in cataloguing this lot.
