Lot Essay

A preparatory study for the painting De pannenkoekenbakster (Gemeentemuseum, The Hague), which shows the boy with a woman baking a cake on a hearth and with a girl perched on a stool. Another drawing for the picture is known, which also formed part of the E.G. Cohen collection (lot 72 in the 1928 sale), and there is a watercolour version of the finished composition (H.E. van Gelder, Jozef Israëls, Amsterdam, 1947, illustrated p. 29).
