The shot of Peggy Moffatt wearing Gernreich's topless monokini literally 'went around the world' and followed him where ever he went. Gernreich himself said Here is the the topless swimsuit - probably the most famous fashion picture of all time and my bete noir. A style icon of the modern age, it marked a turning point in contemporary fashion and fashion photography. Peggy Moffitt said of the costume And the bathing suit? It was a political statement. It wasn't meant to be worn in public.

Gernreich sent the vendor this swimsuit to thank them for an article they wrote as Fashion Editor of the Chicago's American newspaper in 1964.
