Each with japanned top and sides decorated with chinoiserie boats, figures, birds, landscape and architecture, the three mahogany-lined frieze drawers and cupboard doors veneered in Chinese lacquer (the doors also veneered in this lacquer to the reverse), enclosing a shelf in each cupboard, the pilasters headed by rams' masks, possibly re-gilt

Lot Essay

Related commodes by Thomas Chippendale, using a combination of Chinese lacquer and English japanning, were made for Harewood House, Yorkshire. Another Chippendale chinoiserie commode, with similar rams' mask-headed stiles, is at Osterley Park in Middlesex.
