AN UNUSUAL CHINESE PAPER SHADOW PUPPET THEATER GROUP
QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY
Comprising four boxes containing approximately 147 figural puppets, and a large folio containing approximately 84 stage surrounds, backdrop scenery, props, accessories, 18 animal puppets, 83 puppet-heads, each element of painted and shellacked paper pierced to create the designs, and enclosed in paper covers inscribed with names and details; together with a large envelope labeled 'The Metropolitan Museum of Art' , containing four smaller envelopes of 11 figural puppets without heads, 24 puppet-heads, 10 figural puppets, 3 animals, and a few small accessories and fragments; two printed copies of The Red Gate Players, text by Pauline Benton, published Lotus Court Publications, Peking, 1940, and a list in ink on paper of the names of the characters depicted in the puppets, in numerical order
The figural puppets mostly between 8 in. (20 cm.) to 11 in. (28 cm.) high
