Lot Essay

Qu Zhaolin (1866-1937), whose style name was Renfu, was from Beijing. He started work as a court painter at the Ruyi Guan when he was eighteen years old in 1884. Because his brushwork was fine, he was later promoted to “Si Jiang Zhang”. During the Republic period, he retired from court, where he had painted for forty years, and became a professional painter in society.
