Of rectangular form, the flat top with raised central panel, the sides decorated with floral blooms with deeply carved borders, the top with a lion and dragon locked in a struggle, with floral meanders around, the interior lined in blue silk

Lot Essay

In the 19th century the art of wood-carving in Iran was largely confined to the village of Abadeh, where pearwood was used and the only tool employed was a penknife (Vernoit, S., Occidentalism in the Nasser D. Khalili Collection, vol.XXIII, Oxford, 1997, no.35, pp. 69).
