Lot Essay

This is a copy of a fresco of Sennefer's garden, an official during the reign of Amenhotep II (1439-1413 BC), discovered by early Egyptologists, in the 'Tomb of the Vines' near Luxor, who tried to clean the smoke stained gypsum plaster, but as a result washed away the colour. Prior to its 'cleaning', the fresco is known to have been copied by Ippolito Rosellini (1800-1843), professor of Oriental Languages at Pisa University, who together with J. F. Champollion of France, collaborated on an archaeological expedition to Egypt and Nubia between 1828-1829.
