Steve McCurry (b. 1950) is one of the most well regarded contemporary American photographers who has worked all around the world, documenting people, cultures and events for over forty years. His photograph of the ‘Afghan Girl’ is one of the most instantly recognizable and iconic images of the late 20th century, used on the front cover of the June 1985 issue of the National Geographic. A copy was sold in the sale of the archives of the magazine, see Iconic – National Geographic, Christie’s, New York, 6 December 2012, lot 194 and realized $178,900.
He follows an intuitive approach to photography; drawn by composition, a strong sense of colour and an interest in conveying emotion. He is particularly captivated by Asia, where he believes one is transported to a completely different place to meet new experiences and to engage in a sense of discovery. His burning passion to see the world has led him to observe and convey a sense of shared humanity throughout his work, from villagers celebrating Holi festival (lot 157) to a Geisha ascending the stairs in a Kyoto subway (lot 197).
