BURY, Thomas Talbot. Coloured Views on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. London: Ackermann, 1833.

4° (339 x 275mm). 13 fine hand-coloured aquatint plates by S.G. Hughes and H. Pyall after Bury including the plate of rolling stock, with the 3 additional plates by Hughes after I. Shaw, one double-page and 2 folding. (One folding plate with short clean tear affecting image, plates with mainly marginal light spotting or finger soiling). Crimson half morocco gilt by Cross, binders to the King (extremities lightly rubbed); cloth slipcase. Provenance: purchased from Button, 15 June 1946.

SECOND ISSUE, with the three additional plates, one of which only occurs in this issue. Bury was an engraver and lithographer, and may also have played some part in the execution of the plates 'from drawings made on the spot'. As Ray points out, 'This classic record of the beginnings of the railway age was also one of the last significant books illustrated with aquatints.' Abbey Life 400; Ray 45; Tooley 120.
