MARCH, Ausias (c.1397-c.1459). Les obres … ab una declaratio en los marges vocables scurs. Barcelona: Carles Amorós, 22 December 1543. Small 4° (196 x 135mm). Initial on A1 coloured by hand in red, blue and yellow. (Lacking the first blank, scored inscription in lower margin of second leaf, some staining or waterstaining, margins of some leaves with closed wormholes.) Late 19th-century calf, wide gilt border on sides, lettering-piece (head of spine chipped, extremities quite rubbed, new endpapers).
Second edition of the poems of Ausias March, a Valencian knight of Catalan origin, and the first Spanish translator of Homer. The greater number of his 'Songs of Love', deriving from Provencal tradition but written in Catalan, were dedicated to Teresa Bon, who, in death, inspired his later 'Songs of Death'. Here edited, with an extensive vocabulary, by Juan de Resa, chaplain to Philip II. The first edition published in Valencia in 1539 was bilingual. Palau VIII, 151294; Salva I, 767.
