A LARGE EARLY VICTORIAN MAHOGANY PEDESTAL DESK
BY GILLOWS, CIRCA 1846, THE CRAFTSMAN B. SHARPLES
Panelled to the back and sides, the moulded rectangular top with inset gilt-tooled leather writing surface above three frieze drawers, and three further graduated drawers to each side of the kneehole, with lockable hinged stiles, the reverse with false frieze drawers, and two doors, each enclosing a shelf, stamped GILLOWS. LANCASTER, the locks stamped J.D.B & CO. LD / LONDON / IMPROVED LEVER, the central frieze drawer inscribed in pencil B. Sharples / September 1846 and indistinctly further inscribed beneath
29 ¾ in. (75.5 cm.) high; 65 ¾ in. (167 cm.) wide; 37 ½ in. (95 cm.) deep

Lot Essay

Two smaller but otherwise identical models are shown in Gillows' Estimate Sketch Books at Westminster City Archives. The first, made by B. Sharples, is dated November 1846 (E.S.B. folio 5498). A second, larger version, made by Benjamin Hartley, is dated November 1848 (E.S.B. folio 5550).
