A man of multiple talents, Miguel Covarrubias was a sought-after caricaturist, illustrator, painter and writer and is widely regarded as Mexico's 'Renaissance Man', whose accomplishments in the visual arts realm through Island of Bali, his 400-page classic travel literature of the 20th century, and his many paintings give both art connoisseurs and lay-people alike an invaluable look into the cultural and anthropological aspects of Bali. More than anyone, Covarrubias opened the world's eye to Bali. And in no other work do we see the clarity of Covarrubias' vision as in Map of Bali with the Rose of the Winds

Cruise ships were the foremost mode of transport in the 1930s, ferrying the rich and famous across the globe to new exotic cultural destinations. The cruise ships in the drawing - one black, the other white - are recorded also in letters that Miguel Covarrubias wrote to editors and friends.
