Lian, the traditional cosmetic boxes, were usually made in wood during the Qing dynasty. The current lian is particularly precious because of its fine carving, glossy satiny finish, and the extremely fine quality of the jade. Compare with two jade lian in the Beijing Palace Museum Collection with similar shapes, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum -42- Jadeware (III), Hong Kong, 1995, pp. 241-242, nos. 197 and 198. Also compare to an imperial white jade bowl and cover, dated Qianlong period, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 27 November 2013, lot 3398.
